Lamp Broken; Fender Bent
The automobile in the garage had a lamp broken and a fender slightly bent.   Robert Meadows was aroused from bed and accused.   He broke down and confessed.
Acting on the advice of Police Chief Gahan, Sergeant Schmuhl took Meadows and his father to the home of Police Magistrate George R. Thompson.   There Meadows made a brief statement; signed it, and swore to it before Magistrate Thompson.
Motorist Continues Trip.
Meadows continued south in South State street without stopping to learn the identity of his
Victim or the extent of his injuries, according to witnesses.   He went to a dance at the Elgin State Hospital and then to his home.
At 2 o'clock this morning he was aroused from his bed by the police who had traced him.   After being accused, he confessed, and signed and swore to a statement that he was responsible for the accident.
Police Sergeant John Schmuhl telephoned to Assistant State's Attorney Roy R. Phillips to find out what to do with the young man.

Elgin - Past and Present (1927)
George R. Thompson
Now becoming gray in a service he has preformed for nearly thirty years, to the confusion of law breakers and with the approval of good citizens, is George T. Thompson, the veteran police magistrate of Elgih, who this year was reelected to his office for the fifth consecutive term.
George R. Thompson was born in Warren County, Ohio, on Feb. 24, 1850, his father being Thornton Thompson of that county. His mother was Catherine Ann Hitesman, He was at one time mayor of the city of Butlerville, Ohio, and held the office of deputy United States marshal for the southern district of Ohio native of Northampton County, Pennsylvania.
He was educated in the common schools of Warren County and at the Normal School of Lebanon, Ohio. He married Mathilda Stoughton of Hamilton County, Ohio, and has raised a large family.
Mr. Thompson came to Elgin in 1890, under contract with the Elgin City Electric Railroad Co., as electrician.
In 1901 he was elected to the offide of justice of the peace for the township of Elgin, and reelected in 1905 and 1909. In 1910 he was selected for the office of police magistrate for the city of Elgin to which place he has been renamed for five suiccessive terms.
He was at one time mayor of the city of Butlerville, Ohio, and held the officer of deputy Unitred States marshal for the southern district of Ohio.
Upon the opening of the warof 1898 with Spain, Mr. Thompson was activein the organization of a regiment made up of sons of the veterans of the Civil War, and upon the completion of the company was made a first lieutenant and served in that position.

From the Jan. 1, 1938 issue of The Elgin Daily Courier-News
George R. Thompson, Police Court Magistrate For Many Years, Died at 87
George R. Thompson, 87 years old, magistrate of Elgin's Police court for many years, president of the Fox Valley Old Settlers' Assn., and active in fraternal and veterans' organization circles, died New Year's day afternoon at 5 in Sherman hospital. He had been ill for only a few days with a heart ailment.

Active pallbearers will be Atty. Charles G. Seidel, County Clerk Charles Lowry, Police Lt. Frank J. Ramsey, Ernest Kahle, Charles E. Fairchild, and former Mayor Earie R. Kelley.
Mr. Thompson was born in Butlerville, O., on Feb. 24, 1850, and has resided in Elgin since 1890.
Educated in the public schools of Warren county, Ohio, and at South Western Normal school, Lebanon O., Mr. Thompson took up railroading as a young man, and was employed in the service of steam lines for several years. Then he entered the electrical trade, and 48 years ago came to Elgin and entered the employ of the Elgin city street railways as an electrician and maintenance foreman.
In 1901 he was elected a justice of the peace, an office he had held continuously for 37 years. Of more recent years he had been elected police magistrate of Elgin, a position from which he was finally retired on May 1, 1935.
During his many years as a justice and police magistrate, "Judge" Thompson, as he was widely known, won the admiration of lawyers and laymen alike for his common sense understanding of the law.
The magistrate had presided as arbiter in countless family quarrels, neighborhood differences, and had helped many a down-and-outer to his feet.
One of Elgin's first foes of speeding and recless driving in automobiles, Magistrate Thompson often accompanied stiff traffic fines with a lecture to the defendant upon the need for sanity back of the wheel. He also was one of the first to install a "Traffic school" in his court, and many times put uncomfortabel speeders through a series of tests to determine if they were acquainted with accepted standards of safe driving.
Many couples had received their marital blessings from the court, the magistrate having presided agt hundreds of weddings during his many yearsof public service.
During his last term as police magistrate, Mr. Thompson was the certral figure in a notable civil court action testing hjis right to the office, an opinion being cited to show that the office did not legally exist because Elgin was a city located partially in one county and partially in another. Subsequently the city quit payinj the salary for the office, and two and one-half years ago it was abolished insofar as city cases were concaerned.
Suits and counter suits were filed, and finally trhe matter was adjusted, the magistrate receiveding his salary from the time the city quit paying it. Oct. 16, 1932, to May 12, 1935, less the 25 percent reduction in pay given all city employes during that period.
Mr. Thompsonj was a member of the prsbyterian church, Monitor lodge of Masons, Loyal L. Munn chapter No. 96 Cryptic Councul No. 46 R & S M., the Sword of Bunker Hill Elgin lodge 737 B. P. O. Elks Elgin lodge 799, L. O. O. M. Sons of Union Veterans Camp No. 225 an honorary member of the United Spanish War Veterans and adjutnt and quaretermastrer of Veterans post 49 G. A. R. He was however, not a Grand Army veteran simply accepting the office to be of service to his old friends.
Just last summer he was elected president of the Fox Valley Old Setlers Assn. a group in which he was much interested.
He had also been a member and director of the Elgin Morto club, for a number of years.
Besides the widow, Mrs. Jean Thompson who is a past national president of the Auxiliary to Sons of the Union Vererans, Magistrate Thompson is survived by three children, Mrs. Nellis Kreiger, Mrs. F. A. Conyne, and Harry C. Thompson, all of this city; two sisters Miss Alice Thompson of Morrow, O., and Mrs. Florence Hati of Lexington, Ky., six grandchildren Mrs. F. E. Jayne of Algonquin, Mrs. John Hoffman of Maywood, and Emerson G. Krieger, Mrs. Frank Kesner, Miss Allice Krieger, and Jack T. Conyne, all of this city. There are also six great-grandchildren.
Of late months Mr. Thompson had made his home at 155 Hender st.
